Captain Thomas Bury was born 2 February 1827 in Harwich Township, Kent County to William and Margaret (Houton) Bury. He was the grandson of John Colbrook Bury, one of the first settlers in Kent County.

In 1831 the Bury family moved to Lambton County and it was on November 2, 1849 that he was united in marriage to Lucinda Jane RobertsThomas Bury owned and was the Captain of the T. B. Dole, a passenger ship which sailed the St. Clair River as well as the tugs Hero and J. C. Clark.

He also operated one of the first fuel docks in the Sombra area. It was a T-shaped structure extending far out into the St. Clair River. His dock was always well stocked with cord wood which was burnt as fuel on early steam crafts.

Captain Bury also had a system which is considered a precursor of radar. His dock was equipped with a bell which was rung constantly when there was fog guiding vessels safely into the Bury dock.
