Charlotte Eleanor Englehart left a lasting legacy and a generous gift to the Town of Petrolia.

Born October 27, 1863 on a prosperous farm near London, Charlotte moved to Petrolia at age 10 to live with her sister and brother-in-law. She married Jacob (Jake) Lewis Englehart on December 29, 1891 and embraced her new home that included a nine-hole golf course, gardens and large terraces.

She became ill and passed away December 31, 1908 at the relatively young age of 45. In her will, Charlotte deeded her home, its surrounding property and the golf course for the establishment of a hospital, to take effect after her husband also passed.

In 1911 Jake decided to give up his property early so that Petrolia would have the hospital it needed. Modifications to the grounds included two additional wings, an operating room, and a nurse's residence. The Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital continues to care for patients today.
