Colour: Usually white, but also grey, red, brown, green, blue, yellow and orange. 

Hardness: 3 

Streak: White 

Luster: Vitreous  

Magnetic: No 

Conductive: No 

Cleavage: Perfect in 3 directions 

Relative Density: 2.7 

Distinguishing Characteristics: It will dissolve in dilute acids and it is the primary mineral component of limestone. It can be found all over the world. It is a carbonate which holds carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere.  

Uses: Calcite is the base mineral that forms limestone and it is often used in construction. Calcite is used as an antacid tablets. Calcite can also be made into paints (whitewash).It can also be heated to create lime which can be used to neutralize soil acidity.
