Distinguishing Characteristics: It is often found with silica to form a banded iron formation or BIF. Weird note: that Mars has an abundance of hematite which turns the soil reddish brown.

Uses: One of the world's most important sources of iron ore. Hematite is also an important pigment in paints. It can be used as a polishing agent or polished or tumbles as a gemstone.
