Since 1925, Oil Springs has held a National Historic Site designation for the Oil Springs oil fields.
The museum was established in 1960 and from this time has gained further cultural and historical recognition for the regions' contributions locally and globally for innovation and development of the oil industry.
Our NHS status was reaffirmed in 2006 and a committee in 2010, formally defined the borders of the oil heritage cultural landscape in the Oil Heritage Conservation Study. To further recognize our globally significant reach, in 2017 we made a bid for UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
