'Grandma Heaten’s Chocolate Delight' by Joan Roberts appeared in Watford's Trinity Anglican Church cookbook “Divinely Delicious!” in 1997.

Ethel May Allen was born on October 23, 1885, to Nelson and Mary Jane (Quick) Allen in Essex County, Ontario. Ethel had one brother, Albert Watson Allen, and two sisters, Rowena Allen Coghill, and Olive Allen.

On August 29, 1906, she married Robert “Roy” Heaton in Kingsville, Essex County, Ontario. Roy was born in 1883 in Essex County to William and Martha (West) Heaton.

Roy and Ethel had one son, Allen, who married Kathleen McGarvin. They lived in Toronto. They had a daughter, Leah Jennette Heaton, who married John Searson of Brooke Township, in 1918.

The Heaton’s moved from Essex County by train. They brought Holstein cattle and Percheron horses in the boxcars to their new home at Lot 16, Concession 6, SER Warwick Twp. where they farmed until they sold in 1959 and moved to 569 St. Clair Street, Watford.

Roy passed away in 1961. Before her death in 1970, Ethel made each one of her grandchildren a quilt. Ethel and Roy were laid to rest in St. James Cemetery, Watford, Ontario, Warwick Township.
