This Historic Recipe, Gum Drop Cookies by Mrs. Gladys (Marriott) Slack, comes to us from “Cook Book” – compiled and Published by the C.E.E. Hospital Guild – Petrolia, Ontario - 1953

Gladys R. Marriott was born to Isaac and Liela Jessie (Stephens) Marriott on May 6 1899 in Plympton Twp., Lambton County, Ontario. Gladys came from a large family and was the 5th child of 10 children.

Her siblings were:

• Victoria May Marriott Neely (April 211888 - March 25 1919)
• Jessie Myrtle Marriott (June 26 1891 - January 17 1892)
• Charles Nelson Marriott (November 10 1892 - September 29 1918, whilst in battle in France during WWI)
• Melvin Edward Marriott (March 25 1895 - May 12 1910)

• William Isaac Marriott (March 14 1906 - May 3 1929)

Gladys went on to marry Herbert Austin Slack; the son of Henry and Annie (Edde) Slack. She followed in her family's footsteps, creating a large family of her own with 4 children:

• James Beverly “Bev” Slack (August 20 1924 - March 22 1989)
• Donn Raymond Slack (B.S. Phm.) (April 26 1926 - February 19 2003)
• Herbert “Clare” Slack (October 3 1921 - October 25 2002)
• Gloria Lois Slack (July 10 1927 - April 11 2012)

Gladys and Herbert were the proud grandparents of 10 grandchildren.

Gladys was a well known and respected local artist, with her paintings still sought after today, and Herb was a barber in Petrolia for nearly fifty years.

Gladys Slack died on April 10 1985. Herb predeceased her on May 23 1973. They were both laid to rest at Hillsdale Cemetery.
