This Historic Recipe comes from the cook book “Look ‘N Cook – Children’s Ward Auxiliary – Sarnia General Hospital" by Erva Gleason.

Alta Minerva “Erva” Curran was born 4 Nov 1906 in Dawn Township, Lambton County to Edward and Alta (Risk) Curran. Erva was the youngest of four children:
- Leone Eileen Curran - b. 20 April 1891 - m. Timothy Phillip Kerrigan on 9 October 1933 – d. June 1982
- Edna Verne Curran – b. 20 April 1891 – M. Paul Dalton on 23 August 1924 d. 1962
- Henry Carlyle (Harry) Curran – b. 21 August 1895– m. Gladys Catherine Callaghan –d. 1956
- Alta Minerva “Erva” Curran

Erva attended Normal School in London and became a school teacher. On 29 of January 1934 she married William Gleason at Courtright, Ontario. William was the son of John and Margaret (Power) Gleason. Erva and William had five children, three sons and two daughters. Erva passed away on 31 March 1994 and was laid to rest with her husband William who had predeceased her on 12 February 1961. They are buried in Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, Sarnia, Ontario.

Ingredients

2 cups flour
1 cup white sugar
4 tbsp. cocoa
1½ tsp. soda
1 cup warm water
1 cup Miracle Whip
1 tsp. vanilla

Instructions

Sift flour, sugar, cocoa and soda together. Add Miracle Whip, water and vanilla. Beat all together for 3 or 4 minutes scraping batter from sides of bowl 2 or 3 times. Pour into well greased 7x11 inch pan. Bake at 325 F for 40 minutes. Cool and ice with favourite chocolate icing.
