This historic recipe comes from the “Cooking Favourites from St. Paul’s United Church U.C.W., Petrolia, ON.

Olive was born on the 7th of July 1932 as the third daughter of William (1881 – 1972) and Margaret (McKenzie) Bain (1887 – 1971). Her sisters were Jean (1908 – 1977) and Christena (Bain) Davis (1924 – 1999).

Olive married and had two children, a boy and a girl, and six grandchildren.

Olive was a beloved school teacher, teaching at Queen Elizabeth II Public School, Hillcrest Public School as well as many others around Lambton County. One of Olive's specialties in teaching was Remedial Reading, helping many students with their literacy.

She was an active member of the C.E.E. Hospital Auxiliary as well and served on the hospital board for 15 years. She was always active in her community and her church – St. Paul’s United in Petrolia.

Olive passed away on the 19th of September 2014 she was laid to rest in Hillsdale Cemetery, Petrolia, Ontario.

Ingredients

14 large cucumbers
12 onions
2 c. vinegar
3 ½ c. water
½ c. flour
3 c. granulated sugar
3 tsp. mustard (dry)
1 tsp. turmeric
1 tbsp. ginger
2 red peppers (sweet or hot)

 

Instructions

Slice cucumbers and onion thin. Sprinkle with salt. Let stand overnight. In morning, drain well; add vinegar, water mixed with flour, white sugar, mustard, turmeric, ginger and finely cut peppers. Boil together for a minimum of 15 minutes. Seal Jars while hot.
