Opportunities for women in the workplace have changed thanks to new ideas about the concept of work and early trailblazers who challenged old professions and set a new standard for women in business.

Women have often been left out of discussions about work because the concept ignores a lot of the unpaid work that women do (housework, childcare, care of the elderly, or community service, as a few examples). If we think more broadly about the concept of “work” we can better understand how women became involved in business. Sometimes women choose to take on a new position, while others are forced to work after the death or injury of their husband.

Women throughout history who tackled new opportunities in business paved the way for the successful businesswomen in Lambton County today.
