Can't visit our museum? You can bring hands-on artifacts and activities into your classroom. Lambton Heritage Museum's classic Museum-in-a-Box kits are being updated and modernized into Travelling Trunks. The first revised kit is the Schooldays in Early Lambton Travelling Trunk. In the meantime, the classic kits are also available. Each kit contains artifacts, information, and activities for your students.

Rental cost is $15.00 per week. We recommend a two week rental period. Kits must be booked two weeks in advance of when you will need them. Availability of kits may vary. Arrangements can be made for pickup and return either at the Museum, or your nearest Lambton County Library location.

Travelling Trunk

School Days in Early Lambton

Schooldays in Early Lambton contains artifacts from the museum's education collection and a Teacher's Guide that outlines a series of ready-to-use, curriculum-linked activities. Learn what it was like to go to school in Lambton's early schools. Practice cursive writing, complete lessons from old textbooks, conduct a spelling bee, and more.

Suggested grade level: 1-4

Curriculum links:

  • Gr. 1 Heritage and Identity: Our Changing Roles and Responsibilities
  • Gr. 3 Heritage and Identity: Communities in Canada, 1780-1850
  • Gr. 1-3 Language
  • Gr. 1-3 Mathematics.

Then and Now

Then and Now introduces young students to the museum and its collection. Through examination of artifacts, students see and touch objects used in daily life over one hundred years ago. After comparing the artifacts to things we use today, a Then and Now chart is made to reinforce the concepts discussed.

Suggested grade level: Primary

Pioneer Skills in the Home

Learn how to make butter the old-fashioned way, dye wool with natural dyes, and make beeswax candles. Try carding and hand spinning wool, quilting, or knitting. These were all essential skills for early settlers. Discover these activities and more in this artifact-rich museum kit.

Suggested grade level: Primary and Junior

If I Were a Child in 1890

By examining museum artifacts, students experience what life was like for a child in the 1890s. The kit explores lifestyle themes including chores, toys, clothing, personal grooming, and school.

Suggested grade level: Primary and Junior

Pioneer Skills on the Farm (Apples)

Apples are an important part of our agricultural past and present. Learn about apple cultivation. Use the apple peeler to make dried apples or make a pomander. Try some old recipes. Explore the world of apples, from seeds to cider.

Suggested grade level: Primary and Junior

Detective In Time

Students are introduced to the role of the museum, what artifacts are, and what can be learned from them. They become curators and use their analytical skills to study a series of unidentified artifacts. Clues found by 'reading the artifacts' help to develop an awareness of, and appreciation for, everyday objects and their uses.

Suggested grade level: Primary, Junior, and Senior

After Confederation - A Nation Grows

The objective of this kit is to carefully study artifacts and archival materials, and to use the backgrounds provided to make assumptions about the past. Topics covered include:

  • The rush for black gold
  • The making of Canada's breadbasket
  • Heading west for free land
  • The horse as a nation builder
  • At home in a new land

Suggested grade level: Senior
