Teachers can rent one of our Travelling Trunk education kits to use in their classroom. The kits contain museum artifacts, reproductions, hands-on activities, and lesson plans that correspond to the Ontario Curriculum.

Currently there is no cost to borrow the kits from the Oil Museum of Canada or access the Teacher's Manual. We recommend a two-week rental period. Kits must be booked two weeks in advance of when you need them. Availability of kits may vary. Arrangements can be made for pick up and return.

Oil History

Suggested grade level: 7-10

Examine this history of the first commercial oil well in North America. You will learn about the problems that these oil pioneers faced to start this new industry, in the wild swamps of Lambton County. This kit explores the rags to riches stories of the dreamers, scoundrels, and innovators as they rush to harvest and process the black gold. See the evolution of the oil industry from the very beginning to today.

Download the Oil History Teacher's Manual.

Geology

Suggested grade level: 4-9

Look at the natural resources of Southern Ontario. You will identify rock and mineral samples, perform experiments and search for oil. You will examine the phrase "if you can't grow it, you have to mine it." This kit has many rock and mineral samples for student to touch and look at.

More kits added as they are developed. Interested in a particular topic not already seen here? Let our Education and Program Coordinator know.
